3 to 7 days before the singing:

Drink plenty of water. Keep yourself hydrated and your thirst quenched.

Stay away from chocolate that is just about the worst thing you can eat before performing.

Drink hot tea, cider, or just hot water with a teaspoon or two of honey in it.

Take Vitamin C tablets or eat fruits/vegetables rich in Vitamin C to aid your bodies natural defenses. Hot Lemon & Honey or Blackcurrant both contain vitamin C and anti-viral properties and fresh ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties – grate a little ginger and add it to hot water, sweeten with honey if required.

Whip an egg white, stir in one tsp of honey, the juice of a lemon and 2 drops of glycerin (available at any pharmacy-not harmful in these quantities). Take two tsps. a day. Your ranges will be less strained.

The day of the singing:

Use honey. Just having a teaspoon will coat your throat, making your voice sound smoother. A tablespoon of honey before you sing will coat your throat and relieve soreness from your vocal cords being overworked or stressed.

Don’t drink any dairy the day before or the day of. Also don’t eat anything to sugary. It messes up your throat.

Don’t practice too much before you perform. It will just dry your throat.

Massage your neck front and back in a downward motion.

Get plenty of rest/sleep before the singing

Avoid Tea, Coffee, Cream & Alcohol before singing as these will cause the vocal cords to constrict and can have a dehydrating effect.

Keep room-temperature water on hand in the recording session. Room temperature water won’t shock your vocal cords the way that hot or cold water will. Drinking water that is hot or cold stuns the vocal cords and will make them stressed. If you must drink hot or cold water (sometimes, it’s the only thing on hand), swish it around in your mouth to get it at the proper temperature. When drinking tea, stick to herbal tea, and again try to cool it down in your mouth before it hits your vocal cords.

Slippery Elm lozenges and other throat drops are used by some singers to soothe the throat. Menthol based drops and lozenges cool your throat, however the menthol also numbs your vocal cords slightly. Look for non-mentholated drops with more of a honey, lemon, and herbal base such as Halls Fruit Breezers and Ricola cough drops. You can also try an non-medicated lolly pop such as a barley sugar or a fruit tingle instead.

What if I have a sore throat or am congested:

Hot Water Steam Inhalation, with or without a few drops of Eucalyptus, Peppermint or other Essential Oil helps to clear the sinuses. Many proprietary brands like Karvol, Olbas Oil and Vicks Vaporub use aromatherapy oils as their main ingredient but you should be careful using these products as menthol can have a drying effect…. use sparingly.

Do NOT attempt to Sing and avoid Talking until all medication is finished to allow the inflammation an opportunity to reduce.

On recovery start with some gentle humming for 5-10 minutes at a time and slowly build up to a few vocal exercises in your mid-range gradually expanding the range over several days. The rate of recovery will depend on the severity of illness and how experienced a singer you are. Any recurrence of hoarseness stop and rest the voice for another couple of days.

Honey
Honey is a very soothing sore throat remedy
One well-known remedy for a singer’s sore throat is honey. Honey can be very soothing to a sore throat when added in a healthy dose to a cup of warm herbal tea or water. Singers also have been known to drink honey straight from the bottle.

Salt Water
Another basic sore throat remedy is warm salt water. Used as a gargling rinse, warm salt water is very soothing, and has been touted to improve circulation of infection-fighting antibodies. It doesn’t take much salt to do the job—just a teaspoonful in an 8-oz. glass of warm water, gargled several times a day.

Pickle Juice
Vinegar has been long respected as a home remedy ingredient, but many people can’t get past the flavor of vinegar in its natural state. A tasty way to get vinegar to a sore throat without the pucker factor is by drinking pickle juice. Any flavor of jarred pickle contains a vinegar base, and the higher the vinegar content the better. Simply pour the pickle juice in a glass and sip on it throughout the day.

10th YEAR – A Great Event

The official count for this year was 764 people from across the country including Texas, Ohio. Washington, Florida, Alabama, New York, and all across the South East. THANK YOU ALL FOR coming and thank you to allllllll the helpers!!!!

For our 10th year together, we sang some of our favorite songs. Here is a list of your top 20 songs you voted on, and I believe we sang of them this year:

Exalted

In Christ Alone

There’s A Stirring

Days Of Elijah

I Close My Eyes

I Stand In Awe

My Eyes Have Seen Your Glory

The Greatest Command

You Are My All In All

Ancient Words

Beautiful Lamb Of God

It is Well With My Soul

Our God He Is Alive

Shield About Me

Teach Me Lord To Wait

FEEDBACK

Overall the feedback was very positive of the entire event.

Everyone seemed to really like the new venue (a few still want better acoustics – including myself:)

Several asked for less talking, and more singing – I hear ya, and we’ll do next year!

The trend seemed to indicate that most liked the mix of old/new songs, but more this year asked for more older songs. Next year we’ll do a better job of including some “good ol songs” that everyone knows

DONATIONS

Donations this year totaled $9,140 – woo-hoo!!! Thanks for all the kind and generous donations!

Expenses this year totaled $11,896

Defecit 0f $2,756

CATERED DINNER

My apologies for not explaining the catered dinner very well to the attendees. The Carolina FC Boosters paid for half of the catered dinner (that is why is was only $6)

In exchange for paying for half of our dinner, they took 20 minutes for a short presentation on the school

Next year we’ll do a better job of explaining this

THANKS EVERYONE!!!!!! We hope to see all of you and a few friends next year.

Unlike some of you reading this, I do not have perfect pitch, and I depend on a pitch pipe to help with that starting note, or working through a new song.

Unless you have perfect pitch, a Pitch Pipe is critical to starting a song correctly. I use to carry a Pitch Pipe in my car, I had 2 or 3 stashed away at home which I could never find when I needed one, and I even had one in my Army navigator bag (yes, my man-purse).

I would often borrow one, or use the community Pitch Pipe at the church building, but that brings up some hygiene matters. However, I always have my phone, so for me this is a great use of an iPhone or Android app.

One of the most important aspects (if not THE most important aspect)

of starting a song, is starting on the correct note.

I have not downloaded and used all of the apps below, but I think you can get a good overview of each app. This is not a complicated matter, you simply need something to accurately play a note for you. Some of the apps have many other functions such as metronomes, guitar tuning, and piano keyboards. However, for the purposes of this review we are strictly looking at the Pitch Pipe functionality.

Plays a true, acoustic tone as produced by a chromatic pitch pipe

iPitchPipe is a C-C chromatic pitch pipe app,

Easy touch volume control (before, during and after pitch activation)

Quick touch start and stop of pitch

Default pitch duration of 3 seconds – pitch will not carry on unexpectedly! (not a selling point for me)

Preferred volume level memory

Natural pitch pipe exertion-tactful sound

To use iPitchPipe simply select the note you need by tapping one of the full octave pitches on the wheel. The pitch will automatically stop within 3 seconds or to quickly stop tap the center of the wheel. This is better than not being able to turn off the pitch, but still not optimum. The ultimate would be to only play the note for as long as you hold (press) the screen/button.

SUMMARY – only plays chords, so not the best tool for song leading

KS Chord Pitch Pipe is a great tool since it’s free, but it only plays chords

I could not find an option to only play a single note

Select from various skins

Includes a tap tempo and metronome functions.

Would be an option if they offered the ability to play a single note, instead of Chords. But, then again, I guess they would have to change the name of the app:)

Since it’s free, it’s a nice app to download and play with. For those who are not familiar with musical chords, this app may help train their ear to start hearing various chords.

Musical Lite – This is the app I use, and love it.

Musical for Android is a pocket toolkit for musicians, songwriters, singers, recording artists, and people who just love music. It includes everything you need to be musical on the go.

2 Versions – Musical Pro is currently available in the Android Market for $1.99 and is updated regularly (at no charge to existing customers). It has been extremely well received and has over 5000 downloads and 4.5/5 stars. Musical Lite is available for FREE, including the same metronome & pitch pipe as the Pro version and a limited piano & keyboard. Musical Lite is also in the Android Market and has been downloaded around 200,000 times (with a ranking of 4/5 stars).

Musical Lite has everything you need and PERFECT 10 implementation in my book. Hands down, none of the iPhone apps can touch it.

C Chromatic pitch pipe

God sent His son to deliver us from our sinful selves and bring us home to him – “It is a trustworthy statement … that Christ Jesus came into this world to save sinners” (1 Tim. 1:15). Yet, the Lord did not just seek a quick conversion and then a safe leap into eternity. In between, He desires a new people; to see them live out the life of Christ in their time here that they might demonstrate His love to the world. God predestined us to be “conformed to the image of His Son” (Rom. 8:29). That we would, in process, be transformed (Rom. 12:2) by Christ living in us (Gal. 2:20); this happens when we choose to be crucified with Him (Gal. 2:20; 1 Cor. 15:31). God seeks to see us die to ourselves so that His Son would live within us. As Clive Calver puts it,

“The heartbeat of Christianity is not to receive salvation and try harder. It is not a life changed by renewed effort. The secret of Christianity is not a ‘changed’ life but an ‘exchanged’ one. We give our lives to Jesus and He gives His life to us and lives it through us. That’s ‘Dying to Live’ – we do the dying so that Jesus can do the living.”

Only when we die can the Lord Take Control of us such that we become a new creation in Christ.

My heart, mind, body, soul. These words are drawn from the first and greatest commandment to Love God with the whole of our being. As Calver notes above, the power of a Christian life is not within us; it is, rather, in the power of the Lord living in us. This is Paul’s mind in Gal. 2:20; it is “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Col. 1:27). This originates with God and His love exemplified in the cross. I can do no good except the good that God does in me through power and love of the Son. Left to myself I will lose control of my emotions, my thoughts, my flesh and my life. But, when I yield to the power of Christ and crucify the flesh (Gal. 5:24) – God can change me. We will still be imperfect but we can commit to surrender to the control of Christ.

Letting God take control in each of these areas – by crucifying myself so that Christ will live in me – is central to spiritual life in the Son. We must let God control the heart – the inner being and emotions. This comes through sensing His love for us – moved in our hearts by the sacrifice of God and His love for us. The thoughts of our mind should be brought under His control by daily intake in His word. Our bodies are to be presented to Him as “living sacrifices” (Rom. 12:1-2) – they are no longer to be used for our benefit or pleasure but to become sacrificial offerings of worship; set apart to God, and therefore to others, as the lambs and bulls were set apart to be offered to God in the Law. The whole of our life is to come under control of His Divine Will. This will not begin until we decide to daily go the way of the cross.

O Lord, may we commit ourselves, in loving response to your Great Love with which you have loved us and died for us, to die to ourselves this day. Lord, we petition you, humbly, imperfectly, pleading mercy for our failures, to take control of our hearts, our minds, our bodies, our soul. Make us your people. Mold us. Shape us into people who show Christ living in us to the rest of the world; that the world would see the power of the cross, of your glory, in us. All Praise Be to You, O Lord.

~ Jeff Young
